How direct insurance billing works

Most comprehensive car insurance policies in Australia cover the cost of towing your car after an accident. The catch is that some tow operators want payment at the roadside, which leaves you out of pocket and filling in reimbursement forms on top of everything else.

We do it the other way around. When the tow is part of an insurance claim, we bill your insurance company directly. You give us your insurer and claim number, we tow the car where it needs to go, and we send the paperwork straight to them. For a covered claim, that usually means you have nothing to pay us on the day.

What we need from you

  • Your name and phone number
  • Where the car is, and where it should go (if you know)
  • The make, model and rego of your car
  • Your insurance company and claim number, or let us know you're lodging one
  • The other driver's details if another vehicle was involved

Third-party and not-at-fault crashes

If someone else caused the crash, make sure you've got their name, phone number, rego and insurer before you leave the scene. Pass those on to us and to your own insurer. Where the other driver's insurer accepts responsibility, the tow is normally handled through that claim. If you're not sure who's paying, tell us when you call and we'll explain your options before we hook up the car.

Not insured?

We'll still help. You'll get a clear, upfront quote before we tow, with no hidden fees and backed by our best rates guarantee. See ouraccident towing page for more on what happens after a crash.

WA authorised crash towing business #810

Accident tow costs are regulated by law

Since the Towing Services Act 2024, only businesses authorised by the WA Department of Transport can tow crashed vehicles, and the charges are capped. Quik Tow & Transport is authorised crash towing business #810. These are the most anyone can charge to tow a crashed car in Perth and Peel (from 1 July 2026):

Maximum crash towing charges for light vehicles in Perth and Peel
Crashed car or light vehicleMaximum
Crash tow (first 50 km)$523
Each extra km after 50 km$4.75
After-hours surcharge$149
Storage, per day$27
Admin fee (one-off)$95
Motorcycle storage, per day$13.50
Motorcycle admin fee (one-off)$95

What the tow charge covers: preparing, loading, transporting and unloading the crashed vehicle, clearing crash debris, and the photos, phone calls and paperwork, for the first 50 km.

What's not capped: extra recovery work where the car is hard to reach or load, such as winching it out of a ditch, is charged at a reasonable rate. We'll tell you before we start.

Authority to Tow: before we move a crashed car, you sign an Authority to Tow form that lists the towing and storage costs and where the car is going. You keep a copy.

Insured? For covered claims we bill your insurer directly, so you usually pay nothing on the day.

Step by step

From crash to claim

  1. 1

    Make the scene safe

Hazard lights on and get everyone away from traffic. Call 000 first if anyone is hurt, there is a fire or fuel leak, or the road is blocked.

  2. 2

    Swap details and take photos

Get the other driver's name, phone number, licence, rego and insurer. Photograph both cars, the damage, number plates and the scene.

  3. 3

    Call us

Ring 0419 857 070. Tell us your location, your car, your insurer and your claim number if you have one. If you haven't lodged a claim yet, you can do it while we're on the way.

  4. 4

    We tow your car

We load the car carefully on a tilt tray and take it to your repairer, your insurer’s nominated repairer or assessing centre, or your home.

  5. 5

    We bill your insurer

We send the towing invoice straight to your insurance company with the claim details, so for a covered claim you usually have nothing to pay us on the day.

FAQ

Insurance towing questions

Will I have to pay anything for the tow?

For a claim your policy covers, we bill your insurer directly, so you usually pay us nothing on the day. You may still owe your insurer an excess under your policy, but that's between you and them, not part of our bill. If your policy doesn't cover towing, crash towing charges are capped by the WA Government, and you sign an Authority to Tow showing them before we move the car.

What if I don't have a claim number yet?

That's fine. Call us first so the car is off the road, then lodge your claim by phone or app while we're on our way. Give us the claim number when you have it and we'll attach it to the invoice.

Can I choose which tow truck company to use after a crash?

It's your car and your choice who tows it. If a tow truck you didn't call turns up at the scene, you're free to say no and call the company you want. Check your policy too, since some insurers have their own arrangements.

Where will my car go?

Wherever you and your insurer want it. That's usually your chosen repairer or the insurer's assessing centre. If the car needs to be held while the claim is assessed, we'll arrange that with your insurer.

The other driver was at fault. Who pays for the tow?

Give us both insurers' details. Where the other driver's insurer accepts the claim, the tow is usually covered under that claim. If you're uninsured and the other driver is at fault, tell us when you call and we'll explain your options before we tow.

Which insurance companies do you work with?

We deal directly with insurance companies on behalf of our customers. Tell us your insurer when you call and we'll confirm how billing will work for your claim.

A real person answers 24/7. Tell us where you are and we'll send the nearest truck. Insurance job? We'll deal with your insurer directly.
