Why people in Mount Helena ring us
Life in Mount Helena means long driveways, steep gravel tracks and a fair drive to the nearest mechanic. That shapes the calls we get. A lot of them are cars and utes that have slid off a wet gravel drive or a narrow road shoulder into a drain, where we need to winch the vehicle back onto firm ground before it can be loaded.
Being semi-rural, Mount Helena has plenty of 4WDs, farm utes, older second cars and the odd trailer that hasn’t moved in a while. When one of those needs to go down the hill for repairs or a sale, we can transport it to wherever it’s headed. If you’ve been bogged on a soft bush track after rain, our 4WD recovery crew is set up for that.
Getting to and around Mount Helena
Sawyers Road is the usual way in, coming up from Great Eastern Highway at Sawyers Valley. Keane Street runs through the heart of the suburb, past the two schools, with Stretch Road and Elliott Road reaching across to the other residential pockets. Elliott Road is one of the local routes out towards Chidlow.
To the south-west is Mundaring, and to the west, past Stoneville, you reach Parkerville. The Railway Reserves Heritage Trail runs through Mount Helena too, following the old line behind the tavern.
Stranded in Mount Helena? A few tips
- Mobile coverage can drop out in gullies. If you lose signal, move to higher ground before you call.
- Give us the street number at the gate, as many blocks are set well back from the road.
- Don’t try to drive a car out of a table drain on your own. You can do more damage to the steering or sump.
- In fire season, never park a hot car on long dry grass while you wait.
