Heavy vehicles need the right truck
Dual cab utes and 4WDs like the Hilux, Ranger, LandCruiser, Patrol, D-Max and BT-50 are heavy before you add anything. Once you fit a steel bull bar, winch, canopy, drawer system, long range tank, dual batteries and roof rack, the weight climbs a long way past the brochure figure.
That’s why we ask what’s fitted before we send a truck. Every vehicle goes on a tilt tray, riding fully on the tray with no wear on the tyres, gearbox or transfer case and no kilometres added. Towing a 4WD on its wheels risks damage to the driveline, especially on full time 4WD systems, so we keep all four wheels off the road.
Canopies, bull bars and lift kits
Accessories change how a 4WD loads. A bull bar with a winch adds weight over the front axle. A long canopy or rear wheel carrier adds overhang at the back. A lift kit and bigger tyres raise the height on the tray. When you call, let us know:
- Make, model and whether it’s dual cab, single cab or wagon
- Bull bar, winch, canopy, drawers, roof rack and rooftop tent
- Lift height and tyre size
- Approximate overall height
- Whether it’s towing a trailer or camper
Common reasons for a 4WD tow
Overheating towing a camper up Greenmount Hill, a failed clutch, a snapped CV after a weekend off road, injector or turbo faults on a diesel and crash damage are all regular jobs. Some vehicles make it back onto the bitumen after a trip to Lancelin or the Perth Hills and then stop on the drive home along Wanneroo Road or the Great Eastern Highway.
Towing, not recovery
This page covers towing a 4WD that’s sitting on a road, driveway or other hard surface. If your vehicle is bogged on the beach, stuck in mud or can’t get off a hills track, that’s a recovery job first. See our 4WD recovery service for that, and we can tow the vehicle afterwards if it can’t be driven.
While you wait
Park as far off the road as you can, switch on your hazard lights and put out a warning triangle if you have one. If you’re towing a trailer or camper, leave it hitched unless it’s safer to separate them. Keep everyone out of the traffic lane.
