Why Baldivis Road sees so many crashes and breakdowns

Baldivis Road runs north-south through Baldivis, roughly dividing the suburb in two. West of the road, most of the old sand and limestone country has been turned into housing estates. To the east, the land is flatter and largely rural. The road links those estates with Safety Bay Road, which leads west to Rockingham and Warnbro, and with Kulija Road, which leads east to the Kwinana Freeway. To the north it heads towards Wellard, and to the south towards Karnup.

Baldivis has grown fast, and Baldivis Road now carries far more traffic than the semi-rural road it once was. The pressure point is the intersection with Kulija Road. In RAC WA’s 2025 Risky Roads survey, which received more than 18,000 nominations, it was voted the riskiest intersection in metro Perth, jumping from sixth place in 2022. Nominators said it offered little chance to turn or cross traffic and had a confusing layout, and many suggested a roundabout.

The City of Rockingham says the intersection was built in 2014 and that the area has grown significantly since. It describes a layout that becomes congested in peak periods and has had a higher number of crashes than expected. The City, working with Main Roads WA, has settled on traffic lights and extra lanes as the fix, with completion currently scheduled for March 2029. Until then, the old layout is what drivers have to deal with. Our Kulija Road page covers the other side of this intersection.

What to do after an accident on Baldivis Road

  1. Look after people first. Hazard lights on, then check on everyone. Call 000 if anyone is injured or a vehicle is stuck in the intersection and putting others at risk. If you just need police help, call 131 444.
  2. Get out of the intersection if you can. If the cars can be driven, move them into a side street or onto the verge clear of the turning lanes. A car sitting in the Kulija Road junction is very likely to be hit again.
  3. Exchange names and addresses. In WA every driver involved in a crash must do this. Take down the other driver’s phone number, rego and insurance company as well.
  4. Photograph the scene, including both cars, the plates, the road markings and the position of the cars in the intersection.
  5. Report it if the rules say so. WA requires a crash to be reported to police when someone is injured, when total damage is more than $3,000, or when the owner of damaged property isn’t there. You can usually lodge it through the online crash reporting facility on the WA Government website.

Our accident towing service handles the recovery, and with insurance towing we bill your insurer rather than you.
