Why Great Eastern Highway sees so many crashes and breakdowns
Great Eastern Highway starts at the Causeway interchange in Burswood and heads north-east towards Midland, then climbs the Darling Scarp on its long run to Kalgoorlie. In the metro area it does several jobs at once. It is a commuter route, the main road past Perth Airport, a shopping and business strip, and a freight route for trucks heading east.
From the Causeway to Tonkin Highway it is a six-lane divided road, but through Rivervale, Belmont, Ascot and Redcliffe it is lined with businesses, driveways and side streets, many of them left-in, left-out only. That mix of fast through traffic and cars slowing to turn is a recipe for rear-end crashes. Past the fork with Great Eastern Highway Bypass, the original highway runs through South Guildford, crosses the Helena River on a two-lane bridge and winds through Guildford with a sharp right-angle turn and a railway level crossing before reaching Midland.
East of Roe Highway comes Greenmount Hill, a climb of about three kilometres at a seven per cent grade. Heavy vehicles are told to use low gear on the way down, and there is a truck arrester bed at the bottom. In RAC WA’s 2025 Risky Roads survey, the highway’s intersection with Scott Street in Greenmount was ranked sixth among metro intersections, and Great Eastern Highway was ranked second on the regional roads list for its stretch beyond Perth.
What to do after an accident on Great Eastern Highway
Your first job is to protect yourself from the traffic still moving past. Put your hazard lights on, and if the car can still be driven, move it into a side street or business car park rather than leaving it in a lane. If anyone is injured or a car is blocking the highway, call 000. The WA Police assistance line, 131 444, is for situations that need police but aren’t emergencies.
Before anyone leaves, exchange names and addresses with the other driver, as WA law requires. Take photos of both cars, the plates and where they ended up, plus any business signs nearby that pin down the location. Then check whether you need to report it. Under WA rules, a crash must be reported to police when someone is hurt, when the total damage is over $3,000, or when the owner of damaged property isn’t present. The online crash reporting facility on the WA Government website is the usual way to do it.
If your car can’t be driven, our accident towing service will get it off the highway, and with insurance towing we send the bill straight to your insurer.
