Why Ranford Road sees so many crashes and breakdowns
Ranford Road is a major road in Perth’s south-east, about 12 kilometres long. It begins at Bannister Road in Canning Vale, where it continues from South Street, and runs south-east to Armadale Road on the edge of Forrestdale. Together with South Street it forms one of the two main routes between Fremantle and Armadale, so it carries a mix of long-distance traffic, trucks and local trips from the large housing estates along its length.
The road changes character as it goes. In Canning Vale it has traffic lights at Jandakot East Link Road, Waratah Avenue, Queensgate Drive near Livingston Marketplace, Nicholson Road and Campbell Road. Further east there are lights at Warton Road and Bristle Avenue, roundabouts at Southern River Road and Anstey Road, lights at Tonkin Highway and then more roundabouts before Armadale Road. That constant switch between signals and roundabouts, combined with heavy commuter traffic, means rear-end crashes and failure-to-give-way bumps are an ever-present risk.
The western end has changed a lot in recent years. A new bridge over the Kwinana freight railway, built as part of the Thornlie-Cockburn Link works, carries six traffic lanes and a dedicated bus lane, and Ranford Road station opened in 2025. Ranford Road crosses Nicholson Road in the middle of Canning Vale, so both roads feed traffic into the same busy area at peak times.
What to do after an accident on Ranford Road
- Stay safe. Hazard lights on. If the cars can be driven, move them out of the intersection or roundabout and into a side street or car park. If anyone is injured, or a car is stuck where it could cause another crash, call 000. For non-urgent police help, call 131 444.
- Swap details. WA law says drivers involved in a crash must exchange names and addresses. Note the other driver’s phone number, rego and insurer as well.
- Take photos of both cars, their plates, the damage, and the lights or roundabout where it happened.
- Check if you need to report it. In WA you must report a crash to police if someone is injured, if total damage across everything involved is more than $3,000, or if the owner of damaged property isn’t there. The WA Government website links to the online crash reporting facility where most reports are lodged.
- Decide where the car should go, whether that’s home, your own mechanic or your insurer’s repairer.
When the car can’t be driven, our accident towing service takes care of it, and through insurance towing we bill your insurer directly.
