Why Garden City sees so many crashes and breakdowns
Garden City opened in 1972 and is now known as Westfield Booragoon. It’s one of the big regional shopping centres in Perth’s southern suburbs, with well over 150 stores, a Hoyts cinema and a dining precinct, sitting on the corner of Riseley Street and Marmion Street in Booragoon. Booragoon bus station is on the same corner, and the City of Melville’s council offices are part of the same civic precinct.
That puts a lot of different traffic in one small area. Riseley Street carries shoppers between Canning Highway in the north and Leach Highway in the south, Marmion Street links the centre west towards Myaree and Melville, and buses run in and out of the bus station all day. Inside the centre, drivers are hunting for parks, reversing out of bays and watching for pedestrians all at once.
The result is a steady stream of low-speed incidents: nose-to-tail bumps in queues, scrapes while reversing, and cars clipped turning in or out of the entrances. Then there are the breakdowns. Shopping centre car parks are where tired batteries finally give up, where starter motors fail after a short trip, and where people find a flat tyre when they come back with their shopping. Garden City was on the old version of our dangerous roads list. It isn’t a high-speed black spot, but it keeps tow trucks busy.
What to do after an accident at Garden City
Most crashes here are minor, but take them seriously. Turn on your hazard lights, check on everyone, and call 000 if anyone is hurt or if a damaged car is creating danger on Riseley or Marmion Street. For non-urgent police matters, the number is 131 444.
Move both cars out of the traffic flow if they can be driven: into an empty bay, a side street or a car park entrance, not a bus bay. Under WA law you and the other driver must exchange names and addresses. Note their phone number, registration and insurer, and photograph the damage, both plates and the spot where it happened. If you’ve hit a parked car and the owner can’t be found, leave your details on it, and remember this is one of the situations where WA rules require you to report the crash to police. The same applies if someone is injured or total damage is over $3,000. Reports are usually lodged through the online crash reporting facility on the WA Government website.
If the car isn’t safe to drive, our accident towing service will collect it, and with insurance towing we bill your insurer directly.
