Freeway breakdowns are different
A breakdown on the Kwinana Freeway, Mitchell Freeway, Graham Farmer Freeway or Roe Highway is not like stopping in a side street. Traffic is fast, shoulders can be narrow, and tunnels and bridges leave little room. Getting the car moved quickly matters, but getting yourself safe comes first.
Safety steps, in order
- Get as far left as you can. Use the shoulder or emergency stopping bay. If the car is still rolling, aim for a wider section rather than stopping on a bend or bridge.
- Hazard lights on. Leave them on the whole time. At night, keep parking lights on too.
- Exit on the passenger side. Everyone out on the side away from traffic, if it is safe to do so.
- Get behind the barrier. Stand behind the guardrail or well up the verge, not next to or in front of the car.
- Do not try to fix it on the shoulder. Changing a tyre on the traffic side of a freeway is not worth the risk.
If anyone is hurt, the car is in a live lane or you cannot get out safely, call 000. Main Roads WA incident response crews may also attend to manage traffic around the car.
What to tell us
Freeways all look the same at speed, so precise details help our driver reach you on the right side:
- Freeway name and direction (for example, Kwinana Freeway northbound).
- The last exit or interchange you passed and roughly how far after it.
- Whether you are on the shoulder, in an emergency bay or in a lane.
- Make and model, and whether the car rolls and steers.
A GPS pin by text is the most reliable way to share it.
Getting the car off the freeway
Our tilt tray parks ahead of your car on the shoulder with lights running. The driver winches the car onto the tray, where it rides fully on the deck. No wheels on the road, no wear on tyres or gearbox, no kilometres added. On a busy freeway, the driver works quickly and keeps you behind the barrier until it is time to go.
If it was a crash rather than a breakdown, see accident towing. Where the crash is covered by your policy, we’ll send the freeway tow invoice straight to your insurer.
Pricing
The price depends on how far we are taking the car, the vehicle type, whether it rolls, access on the shoulder and at the drop-off, and the time of day. You get an upfront quote, transparent pricing and no hidden fees, with our best rates guarantee. Call or text 0419 857 070 from behind the barrier and we’ll price the freeway tow on the phone.
